Hi Parents and Students,
Thanks so much for those of you that helped out with our Halloween Party! It was a huge success and all the students loved it. Just a friendly reminder this week that students should enjoy costumes and Halloween treats at home on the 31st, because our class party/costume parade ended last Thursday. I hope you all enjoy your time with your families on the Holiday. A few things:

Dear Parents and Students,
Thank you so much for your cooperation and for coming to SEP conferences! It was excellent to meet with all of you. Also: this week is red ribbon week at Truman! Today was "wear red" day. Tuesday, Oct 10 is crazy hair day Wednesday, Oct 11 is favorite hat day Thursday, Oct 12 is wear your favorite color day Friday, Oct 13 is sports jersey day When students dress up appropriately, they receive a raffle ticket to be entered into a drawing for prizes. Halloween is the other announcement this week: At Truman we are celebrating it on the 26th (the Thursday before the long weekend). We will have a costume parade and dress up! Students are encouraged to wear costumes INCLUDING face paint, but they may NOT wear masks or bring play weapons. I am looking for some volunteers for our class Halloween party from 12:45-1:30. If you'd like to help out, such as organizing a game, supervising, etc. please let me know before the 20th so we can plan! Thank you so much! Mrs. Radford Hi parents and students,
Just a quick reminder that SEP conferences are coming up next week on Tuesday and Wednesday from 4:00-7:30! I hope to see all of you there. We'll just be meeting in Room 20. Feel free to bring your student. If you can't make it during those times please let me know so we can schedule another time. Students should have send home a letter for you that explains how to sign up for a time slot last week, but just in case you didn't receive it I'll include some directions here. Go to Truman's website (http://schools.graniteschools.org/truman/). Then, click on "Online Scheduler" on the right side of the page. (Big button with a clock on it) Next, select Truman Elementary, and enter our password, which is "Thunderbirds." You should be able to then sign up for an available time slot. If this isn't working for you, please contact me and let me know when works best to meet with you! -Mrs. Radford Hello everyone!
Sorry it has been awhile since I posted last! Our lives at school have been kicked into high gear with reading testing and getting reading groups put together. For the past couple of weeks, our class has been working on: Soc studies: the early colonies in what is now the United States--we did a fun lesson yesterday where students got to design Jamestown in groups. I think they turned out great! Photos to follow. Math: Operations in base ten, and story problems with multiplication and division. We have also been working hard at mastering long-hand multi-digit multiplication. (Students should be completing 1.7-1.11 at home this week from GoMath! if they haven't finished in class.) Reading: Our goals for reading have included determining the characters and setting in a story. The biggest focus, though, is getting students to understand the problem and solutions presented within narratives. Science: Students have been working on magnets in class, which they have loved. This week we're learning about electromagnets and will get to do a fun experiment with them. It's never too late to have a conversation with students about magnetic pulls and forces--we're still learning. ANNOUNCEMENTS: *Tomorrow is the maturation program for all students in 5-6th grades. A paper was sent home with students for you to sign if you did NOT want them to attend. I think this is a really beneficial program with great information for students but it is definitely up to you whether they go or not. All students will attend unless they have a permission slip that says otherwise. *Truman Voices, our school choir, takes place on Monday from 4-4:50. Bring your blue permission slips if you wish to participate! *Math Club is after schools on Tuesday from 4-5. It is so beneficial for students! Bring the green permission slips if your student is able to come. : ) As always please ask if you have any questions! SEP conferences are coming up fast at the end of September. Can't wait to see you all there! -Maddi Radford Welcome back to school this week! I am so excited for this new year. It has been so wonderful getting to know your students so far and I'm really lucky to be able to teach them!
Some of the things we are getting into this week: -We're working on place value in math. The key is just practicing patterns and 10 times a number (moving up a place value) and 1/10 of a number (moving down a place value). This will prep the students for work in decimals. -In Wonders we're talking about meeting needs this week. If you want to have a conversation at the dinner table or another setting about the difference between needs and wants just to recap, I think that would be help out our students. -In Social Studies we are going to be learning about the Taino Native Americans. Those are the ones that Columbus first reached on his journey to the United States. The students got to do a scavenger hunt outside today and I think they really enjoyed it. (Pics to follow :) ) -In Science we are starting our magnets unit! It's going to be really fun and really hands on. I'm excited to see the students try to put their science thinking caps on. Have a wonderful week! As always please contact me with any questions you might have. I'm always around. -M. Radford Hello Parents and Students!
It is going to be a great new school year. I can't wait to meet each of you and get to know you all better! This is going to be our class blog for the year. On it you will find all of my contact information, important student dates, announcements, what we are learning for the week, photographs, and much more. I also plan to add to the resources link a little further into the year that will include all of the resources you might need to help students at home. I hope to see you all soon at back-to-school night on Thursday, August 17th at 6:00! -Mrs. Radford |
